AI for Lawyers - Insights and Tools for Your Practice
Artificial intelligence is transforming the legal profession — from automating routine tasks to supporting complex legal analysis. Yet many practitioners remain uncertain about how to use it safely, ethically, and effectively.
While these technologies open new opportunities for innovation, they also raise important questions about risk, responsibility, and professional integrity. Staying informed and up to date with AI developments is essential for every modern practitioner.
Between March and April 2025, the Law Society, in partnership with LexisNexis, conducted a landmark survey to understand how AI is being used and perceived by lawyers across New Zealand. This first-of-its-kind study focused exclusively on New Zealand practitioners. The anonymous responses reflect insights from a broad cross-section of the legal community — providing a clear picture of how AI is shaping the future of legal practice.
As a result, the survey received 575 responses.

Law Society partnered with LexisNexis to support legal professionals
The Law Society partnered with LexisNexis to gain a clear picture of how lawyers were using AI in New Zealand in 2025 and to provide meaningful support for AI adoption by the profession.
This took the form of a research project, a webinar, and a series of 14 workshops on AI and the legal profession, delivered throughout New Zealand. LexisNexis brought its global research insights and its experience as a leading law technology provider to the programme.
The workshops provided an opportunity to explore applications of AI to enhance workflows, support productivity, and identify operational efficiencies. Participants heard first-hand perspectives from industry experts on responsible and transparent use of AI in legal practice. The sessions covered practical considerations for adopting AI tools while maintaining compliance with legal and ethical requirements. Attendees participated in guided sessions focused on AI tools and ways to evaluate solutions for their legal practices.
