The 2025 theme for International Women’s Day (IWD), March 8th is #AccelerateAction, a powerful call to speed up progress toward gender equality. At the current rate, it will take 134 years—more than five generations—to achieve full gender parity. This stark reality reminds us that urgent and decisive action is essential, especially in industries like law, where women face systemic barriers to leadership and pay equity.
The Legal Sector’s Gender Gap
The legal profession has made significant progress in addressing gender inequality, but there’s still considerable ground to cover. An American Bar Association study from 2020 found that women associates earned only 91% of their male colleague's salaries. Overall, the U.S. national average, gender pay gap is 84% according to the U.S. Department of Labor, and is much lower for female minorities.
In 2022, the International Bar Association (IBA) Legal Policy & Research Unit, in collaboration with the LexisNexis Rule of Law Foundation released findings into the lack of representation of women in senior roles across the legal profession for England and Wales. The report demonstrated how women comprise 51% of the positions in the legal sector while only holding 32% of senior roles.
Supporting International Women’s Day is an opportunity for law firms to show leadership and commitment to tackling these issues. By participating in events, creating awareness through content, and engaging your staff, you can help build a more inclusive and equitable legal industry.
How Your Law Firm Can Take Action
