How High-Growth Law Firms Are Accelerating in 2025: 6 Proven Strategies from the Latest Research

U.S. law firm revenue rose 12.5% on average in 2024 and climbed again in the first quarter of 2025, but analysts cautioned that demand for legal services showed signs of slipping early this year.

Wells Fargo’s Legal Specialty Group reported that law firm demand rose by 1.7% in the first quarter, down from 2% in the same period last year and well below the 3.2% growth that firms forecasted for 2025.

“Even as the demand for legal services fell short of industry expectations, U.S. law firms entered 2025 on solid financial footing,” noted Law360.

So while most law firms are performing well today, economic uncertainties in the year ahead — from trade policy and inflation risks to interest rate policy and growth risks — have placed pressures on corporate legal budgets. Law firm leaders are reacting cautiously and wrestling with the right strategies to drive growth in 2025.

2025 High Growth Study

The 10th edition of the Hinge® Research Institute’s annual High Growth Study, which LexisNexis® InterAction® is pleased to sponsor, studied an elite group of “high growth” law firms (those that achieve at least 20% compound annual growth over three years) and found that these firms are thriving by adapting to changes in the way that new business opportunities are nurtured in the legal industry today.

The Hinge Research study is unique in that, beyond its industry-wide benchmarking data collection, it focuses specifically on examining the best-performing law firms and comparing them to their slower-growing peers. This helps law firm leaders learn what the top performers do differently and what appears to give them an advantage in the marketplace. The study found that high-growth firms grew at a median rate that was 5.2 times faster than the average law firm in the industry last year.

Based on the Hinge study’s conclusions, here are six ways for law firms to accelerate growth in 2025:

  1. How Law Firms Can Use AI to Gain a Competitive Advantage in 2025

AI technologies are becoming integral components of legal AI platforms that enhance service delivery and business operations for law firms. While these features are in their early stages, the most successful firms are already leveraging them and even developing their AI-powered solutions to stay ahead of the competition.

  2. Why High-Growth Law Firms Are Prioritizing Technology and Team Training

High-growth firms exhibit a higher level of digital maturity compared to their slower-growing peers, with nearly a third achieving the highest level of maturity by leveraging a wide range of data across their tech stack to make critical business decisions and personalize marketing efforts. Firms with low digital maturity should begin budgeting to modernize their technology and train their teams to maximize their investment.

  3. What Is the Ideal Marketing Mix for Modern Law Firms?

Many of the top-performing law firms excel in both online and offline marketing, with an optimal mix typically being 55% digital to 45% traditional. While this is a useful benchmark for most organizations, it is important to note that not all marketing techniques are equally effective.

  4. Why Digital Advertising Drives Measurable Growth for Law Firms

Digital advertising is the top-rated marketing technique for high-growth firms, especially when measured by impact. If you are new to this strategy, consider starting with LinkedIn or Google Ads, and work with an experienced partner who understands the legal industry to navigate its complexities effectively. Law firms operate in a highly specialized digital advertising landscape, and the one-size-fits-all online advertising formulas some providers and agencies suggest are ineffective. Valuable to note that in 2023, Google was guilty of violating its own 'trusted advertiser policy' as 80% of its video ads were misplaced on irrelevant sites and despite Google's protests, the court ordered refunds. The Association of National Advertisers put out a study on digital advertising in 2023, citing rampant inefficiencies in online ads.

  5. How Thought Leadership Content Builds Visibility for Law Firms

Producing high-quality content regularly is essential for law firms to showcase their expertise and attract potential buyers. Executives should prioritize content creation now to ensure their firm's visibility and engagement with a broad audience.

  6. Why Outsourcing Legal Marketing Delivers a Strategic Advantage

High-growth firms understand the strategic advantage of outsourcing specialized expertise, enabling them to access superior talent at a lower cost compared to hiring equivalent in-house professionals. This approach not only enhances their marketing efforts but also optimizes operational efficiency.
