In Lexis Advance®, all documents of the same type have a common structure, composed of natural parts referred to as segments. For example, in cases you find segments for name, date, court, opinion and dissent, among others.
You can restrict your search to a specific segment of a document, such as the name of a case opinion or the text of a statute section. Different types of documents have different segments. For example, a case doesn’t have the same segments as a newspaper article.
