Trump's Sister, Third Circuit Senior Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, Decides To Go Inactive On the Bench
According to an article broken today by our colleagues at Law360, President Donald Trump's sister, a federal appellate judge with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, has decided to stop hearing cases. https://www.law360.com/articles/888127/3rd-circ-judge-trump-s-sister-stops-hearing-cases .
This news comes on the heels of the flurry of legal news surrounding President Trump's Executive Order imposing travel restrictions on persons from several Muslim-majority countries, including refugees from Syria. After U.S. District Judge James L. Robart (Washingon) temporarily blocked nationwide enforcement on the ban, President Trump tweeted: " The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!" and "Interesting that certain Middle-Eastern countries agree with the ban. They know if certain people are allowed in it's death & destruction!" https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/02/04/trump-lashes-out-at-federal-judge-who-temporarily-blocked-travel-ban/?utm_term=.92e121ad80cd
According to the Law360 article, President Trump's older sister, Third Circuit Senior Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, decided this week to go inactive on the bench, relinquishing her staff and chambers despite being scheduled to hear cases this year. The article notes that Judge Barry, a 79-year-old Republican, has served on the federal appeals court since 1999, when President Bill Clinton nominated her. Inactive judges are still able to serve on court committees and reactivate their status.
