"In the wake of the introduction of
the U.S. Senate immigration reform bill, AI Justice is releasing a new
report that makes the case for urgently needed reform of the nation's
immigration detention practices. The report, Broward
Transitional Center: A 'Model' for Civil Detention, notes the
dehumanization of the center's detainees, who have no criminal record or only
minor offenses such as traffic tickets. The BTC report features the cases of numerous detainees
with no criminal or minimal criminal history needlessly subjected to abuse.
"Mercedes," for example, told a BTC deportation officer she was scared
to return to her homeland. She should have been given an interview to
determine whether she could apply for asylum. Instead, she was quickly
deported. Angel Raymundo was diagnosed with a painful hernia at BTC.
ICE declined to pay for the surgery, yet detained him for six months while he
suffered much pain. The report also documents three cases of sexual assault and
questionable due process in BTC's immigration court." - Americans for Immigrant Justice, Apr. 29, 2013.
