There are compliance challenges for EU businesses with the advent of the Cookies Law Revisions to the E-Privacy Directive, which came into force on May 26, 2011. The UK is one of only a few member states to have implemented the revisions into law. Even in the UK there is a one year "grace period" for businesses to comply. How to comply is a real challenge and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) recognizes that businesses must set the compliance agenda.UK Legislative BackdropOn May 4, 2011, the UK government published the Privacy & Electronic Communications (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 2011(2011 Regulations) 1 amending the Privacy & Electronic Communications Regulations. 2 The 2011 Regulations implement the revised E-Privacy Directive 3 that the European Commission adopted in December 2009 as part of a general revision of the EU Telecommunications and Electronic Communications Framework.
