Mid-Atlantic states most economically mobile
Eight states located mainly in New England and the Mid-Atlantic region offer the greatest opportunity for moving up the earnings ladder, according to a study by the Pew Center on the States. Pew's research shows that residents of Maryland, New York and New Jersey, in particular, had the highest upward mobility and lowest downward mobility over the last decade. Conversely, residents of nine states in the South, led by Louisiana, Oklahoma and South Carolina, had the lowest upward mobility and highest downward mobility over that period.
