How to Properly Erase a Hard Drive

Productivity blog Lifehacker recently reported that in a recent experiment performed by Kessler International, a computer forensics company from New York,  regarding used hard drives available on eBay, 40% of the hard disk drives purchased on eBay contained sensitive (and sometimes embarrassing) information. Lifehacker has prepared a very helpful guide to properly erasing physical media such as hard drives. The guide explains how data is stored and lists methods for securely erasing that data.

As noted by ABA Site-tation on the ABA Legal Technology Resource Center, considering “the breadth of sensitive client information attorneys now store electronically -- from emails to financial information to copies of vital documents -- this topic is of deep importance. Attorneys who fail to properly delete a client's sensitive information from a hard drive before selling it, giving it away, or donating it, risk running afoul of their state's ethical or professional responsibility provisions mandating that they safeguard client information.”
