Federal Judge Compels Arbitration Of Seaman's Claims in Panama

MIAMI - After determining that all jurisdictional requirements under the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitration Awards were met and that a seaman alleging injury-related claims against his employer failed to raise affirmative defenses, a Florida federal judge on April 2 granted a cruise line's motion to compel arbitration of the case (Gonzalo Lujan v. Carnival Corp., No. 11-23826, S.D. Fla.; 2012 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 45812).
