Tribal Immunity Negates Payday Lending Suit, California Panel Finds

LOS ANGELES - A California appeals panel on Jan. 21 affirmed the dismissal of the state's suit against five payday loan businesses owned by a company related to tribal entities, agreeing with a trial court that the businesses are sufficiently related to their respective Indian tribes to be protected from the suit under the doctrine of tribal immunity (The People of the State of California v. Miami Nation Enterprises, et al., No. B24644, Calif. App., 2nd Dist.).
