John D. Kuhnlein, DO, MPH, CIME, MROCC, FACPM, FACOEM, is a specialist in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He finished his residency in Occupational Medicine at the
Oklahoma in 1990, where he received a Master’s Degree in Public Health. While living in
Sioux City, Iowa, he helped found the Siouxland Safety Council. Dr. Kuhnlein then practiced in
Cleveland, Ohio for five years, where he was the president of Kuhnlein, Martin, and Tipton, a clinical practice in Occupational Medicine. After living in Omaha for eight years, he moved to the
Ankeny area in 2005.

Dr. Kuhnlein served as Corporate Medical Consultant to IBP, Inc. for thirteen years, and also served as Fitness for Duty Medical Director for the Union Pacific Railroad for three years as a consultant. He has worked with several companies on a clinical and consulting basis. He is currently Corporate Medical Advisor to Tyson Foods, Inc.
In Sioux City, he worked with John Morrell & Co. and Metz Baking Company. In Cleveland Dr. Kuhnlein worked with a wide variety of companies, including service as local medical director for Sea World of Ohio, and service with Matrix Essentials.
Dr. Kuhnlein partnered with other medical specialists to develop and publish a preliminary article on a method for predicting which acute clinical cases might develop into chronic cases. Further studies are ongoing. He also published a monogram on preventing workplace violence, and an article on Corporate Implementation of Automatic External Defibrillators.
Dr. Kuhnlein participated in a national initiative with the American Psychiatric Association to prevent and respond to mental health issues arising from terrorist activities. He also developed and moderated a seminar dealing with cultural competence in health care, addressing multicultural issues as they relate to health care workers.
Dr. Kuhnlein has extensive experience in occupational medicine, from the clinical examination room to the executive boardroom. He is currently in the private practice of occupational medicine and is the president and founder of ORCA, PC, doing business as Medix Occupational Health Services.
