Peter Nias is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP, based in its London office. He is head of the London office Tax Department, where his practice focuses on direct and indirect tax advice on a broad range of corporate and commercial business activities, including acquisitions and disposals, and corporate structures for UK and international business investments. Peter also advises on general corporate commercial tax matters for companies and advises individuals on wealth preservation techniques.
In the area of structured finance, Peter’s experience includes asset and cross-border structuring. Peter also regularly advises on thin capitalisation and transfer pricing issues as well as tax disputes and litigation including negotiating settlements with the UK tax authorities.
Through membership of a number of professional technical committees, he is in regular contact with senior Revenue and Customs officials in respect of the consultation process involving new legislation. He is chairman of the International Tax Sub-Committee of the Law Society’s Tax Law Committee and a member and former chairman of the International Tax Sub-Committee of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
Peter is a frequent speaker at tax conferences on a wide range of tax issues, including: international structuring for multinational corporations, transfer pricing, asset financing and securitisations, and European Union harmonisation and regularly contributes articles on these subjects to technical journals (an updated list of articles is posted on the McDermott Will & Emery website at www.mwe.com).
He was named by International Tax Review in their Directory of the “World’s Leading Transfer Pricing Advisers”. He also is named as a leader in his field in a number of directories, including Legal 500 (“highly regarded by peers”), Chambers UK 2010 ('draws particular praise for his expertise in cross-border taxation issues', and 'interviewees describe him as "very pleasant to work with and completely client-focused"') and Legal Experts. Peter was recently named a worldwide leader of tax in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2007.
James Ross is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP, based in its London office. He is a member of the Tax Department where his practice focuses on a broad range of international and domestic corporate/commercial tax issues, including corporate restructuring, transfer pricing and thin capitalisation, double tax treaty issues, corporate and structured finance projects, mergers and acquisitions and management buyouts.
He has particular experience in advising US groups in the structuring of UK and European inbound investments and providing advice on technical issues in the context of revenue investigations and statutory audits.
His experience also includes advising on employment tax issues, the taxation of the body of energy and energy derivatives and tax aspects of private equity transactions.
Prior to joining the firm, James was an associate at Bird & Bird where he undertook his training and qualified as a solicitor.
