About Richard Levin
Partner, Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP
is a partner in the Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP restructuring department. Rich's practice focuses on creditors' rights, insolvency, reorganisation and bankruptcy. He has negotiated and structured complex domestic and international transactions involving distressed or insolvent companies and guided corporate debtors, creditors and acquirers through Chapter 11 and out-of-court restructurings. He has also conducted bankruptcy-related litigation both in connection with and independently of restructuring transactions. Rich's clients have included companies in the energy, auto, utility, financial, telecommunications, technology, real estate, restaurant, retail, gaming and agricultural industries.
Rich's recent representations before and since joining Cravath have included Credit Suisse as agent for the senior secured lenders in the Tropicana Entertainment LLC Chapter 11 reorganisation, JPMorgan Chase as agent for senior lenders in AMERCO's Chapter 11 reorganisation, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary in a Chapter 11 acquisition of Immunicon Corp, a Ripplewood Partners affiliate in its acquisition of Interstate Bakeries Corp. under a Chapter 11 plan, Credit Suisse and other creditors in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, and UGC Communications in connection with concurrent US Chapter 11 and Dutch Akoord proceedings to restructure more than US$5 billion of debt, and Refco Inc in its Chapter 11 case.
Rich was counsel to a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee from 1975 to 1978, where he was one of the primary authors of the 1978 Bankruptcy Code. He currently serves as vice chair of the National Bankruptcy Conference and is a member of the board of directors and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. Rich has served as a consultant to the World Bank and to the Central Bank of Brazil regarding Brazil's 2005 bankruptcy legislation, as faculty at the Federal Judicial Center's Bankruptcy Judge Workshops since 2002, and as a lecturer in law at Harvard Law School. He is a frequent lecturer on bankruptcy law in continuing legal education programmes and is a regularly published author in the legal press.
Rich is cited as one of the country's leading practitioners of bankruptcy and creditor-debtor rights law in
The Best Lawyers in America 2008
and named as a leading lawyer in
magazine in 2007. He has also been recognised in

Rich was born in Los Angeles, California. He received an SB from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972 and a JD from Yale Law School in 1975, where he was an editor of the
Yale Law Journal
. He joined Cravath in 2007 as a restructuring partner.
