Winston & Strawn LLP announced on December 16, 2008 that David Colin and Karen M. Kowalski have been elected partner.
Karen Kowalski is a partner in the firm’s Chicago office concentrating her practice on federal and state tax controversies, including audits, appeals, and litigation. Ms. Kowalski has represented clients before the Internal Revenue Service on a variety of tax controversy matters, including corporate reorganizations, adjustments to partnership items, environmental-related expenses, leasing transactions, and the defense of purported tax shelters and their related penalties. She also has experience with public and private debt/equity offerings, S corporations, and tax accounting.Ms. Kowalski was recognized by the publishers of Law & Politics and Chicago Magazine as a "Rising Star" in 2008. Ms. Kowalski received a B.A. in Spanish, with high distinction, in 1997 from the University of Illinois and a J.D., with honors, from DePaul University College of Law in 2000, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif and article and note editor for the DePaul Law Review. She also received a LL.M. in taxation, with distinction, from Georgetown University Law Center in 2002.
David Colin is a partner in the firm’s Paris office who focuses his practice on tax planning and litigation. Mr. Colin has experience with optimization of indirect taxes in cross-border transactions, VAT advisory matters, negotiation with tax authorities, and due diligence counseling. His work on these matters has involved the industrial, chemical, telecommunication, and real estate sectors. Mr. Colin received a DESS in Taxation from the University of Paris V-René Descartes in 1995. He received a Maîtrise in Business Law from the University of Paris V-René Descartes in 1994.
