Sutherland announces that Pilar Mata has joined the firm as an associate in the Tax Practice Group, resident in the Washington, D.C., office. Ms. Mata focuses her practice in state and local tax, and she has represented clients in tax controversies at the audit, administrative, trial and appellate levels. She has also advised clients regarding the state and local tax consequences of various business transactions. “State and local tax issues are of growing concern to our clients and will intensify as state and local jurisdictions look to overcome tax deficits in the current economic climate,” said Tax Practice Group Leader Jerome B. Libin. “Pilar is a valuable addition to our team, which already represents 20 percent of the Fortune 100 and is one of the fastest growing areas of our nationally recognized tax practice.” Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Mata was an associate with Morrison & Foerster in California. She has experience in franchise and income taxes, fees, gross receipts taxes, telecommunications taxes, and sales and use taxes. She has extensive knowledge in apportionment, nexus and addback issues.
