Two New Partners Added to Reed Smith's State Tax Group

New York-Based Partners McLoughlin & Young Join Firm’s Deep Bench

(January 28, 2010, New York) – The State Tax practice at Reed Smith LLP extended its nationwide reach today, adding two partners in the firm’s New York office. With the addition of Michael McLoughlin and Aaron Young, the group now has 23 lawyers in five offices to represent the firm’s clients in every state across the country.

Michael and Aaron not only give Reed Smith a significant state tax presence and heightened capability in New York, but they also greatly expand the services we can provide clients doing business in the major jurisdictions in which they each have experience in handling state tax matters,” said Lee A. Zoeller, head of the firm’s State Tax practice.  “The firm is now positioned to handle state tax matters for our clients from coast to coast.”

Aaron Young was formerly a partner in the New York office of Alston & Bird. Prior to joining Alston & Bird, Mr. Young was an associate at Dechert, where he worked with Mr. Zoeller and other members of that firm’s state tax group who joined Reed Smith together in early 2007.

“I am delighted to be joining my former colleagues,” Mr. Young said.  “I know most of this group very well, and I am looking forward to working with them again, as well as to having the resources of Reed Smith available to provide truly national state tax services to my clients.”

Mr. Young represents major corporations in state tax controversies throughout the country, with particular emphasis in the northeast states.  Mr. Young has presented numerous lectures regarding state tax issues, including “Handling New York Corporate Tax Audit Issues,” “Handling Northeast State Tax Audit Issues,” “FIN 48: Selected State Tax Issues,” and “State Tax Issues Regarding the Insurance Industry.”  Mr. Young is a contributing author to The State and Local Tax Lawyer, the International Tax Review and Practical Tax Strategies.  He received his J.D. from The Dickinson School of Law at Pennsylvania State University in 1995, and his B.A. in finance from Michigan State University in 1990.

Michael McLoughlin was formerly counsel in the New York office of Morrison & Foerster.  Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster in 2006, Mr. McLoughlin practiced at Jones Walker in New Orleans.  Before that, he held a range of positions in major accounting firms, and has more than 15 years of state and local tax experience.

“Reed Smith’s client-focused approach and nationwide state tax capabilities provide a great platform, and I am particularly excited about being part of its expanding state and local tax practice,” Mr. McLoughlin said.

He is a frequent speaker on state tax topics and has authored articles on a range of state tax topics in publications, such as State Tax Notes, The State and Local Tax Lawyer, The Journal of Multistate Taxation, The Multistate Tax Report, Tax Notes International, and COST’s State Tax Report.  He co-authored State Taxation of Pass-Through Entities and Their Owners, published by Warren Gorham & Lamont.

Mr. McLoughlin received his J.D. from Louisiana State University in 1988 and his B.A. from LSU in 1985.

“The firmwide tax practice has tripled in size in less than three years, and we anticipate continued growth to meet the needs of our clients in whatever jurisdiction they require our services,” said Bob Nicholas, Global Head of Legal Personnel and the Managing Partner of the New York office.  “We are really pleased to have these two top-quality partners join us in New York.”

Kelly Cooper Miller will join the firm’s Philadelphia office on February 8.  She is a former associate in the tax practice group at Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan.
