A bipartisan group of senators said January 28 that they hope to introduce an immigration bill by March that will require those living in the U.S. "without permission" and undocumented workers seeking U.S. citizenship to pay back taxes. According to the group's framework for immigration reform, potential legislation would create a "tough but fair path to citizenship" for those currently in the country. That process would require the payment of back taxes to secure citizenship. The tax requirement would be part of a broader reform effort that would also include securing the border and creating an employment verification system.
