Grassley Seeks Answers on $70 Million in IRS Employee Bonuses

Senate Finance Committee member Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, in a June 18 letter to Daniel Werfel, IRS principal deputy commissioner and deputy commissioner for services and enforcement, demanded answers about an alleged agreement to preserve $ 70 million in employee bonuses.
 
Grassley said the IRS allegedly intended to execute an agreement June 19 to preserve the monetary awards despite an April 4 directive from the Office of Management and Budget that bonuses should not be issued while the budget sequestration is in place, unless legally required. Werfel signed the directive in his former role as OMB controller.
