LA: Gretna City Council Investigates Workers’ Comp Fund as Slush Fund

GRETNA, LA - The Times Picayune reports that the Gretna City Council has fired its auditor and is considering a legislative audit of the city's finances, this after a councilman accused Mayor Ronnie Harris of creating a secret slush fund of $1.8 million that was socked away in a Workers' Compensation Fund. The city, once self-insured, because insured in 2006 through the Louisiana Workers' Compensation Corp., but continued to deposit $78,000 a month into the Fund. It is alleged that the city used those funds to cover expenses without council approval.
