Q1: What is one of the top questions you are asked?
A1: Hi Heidi great question. I'm often asked about how the pricing and searching works on Advance so one of my tips is to: Take advantage of the transparent pricing mode. Lexis Advance® utilizes a document access pricing model. This means that users with a qualified subscription can run as many searches as they want from the Red Search Box and will only incur a charge when they access a document outside of their subscription plan. For cost recovery purposes, all inside and out-of-plan documents are recorded to support client bill back
If you are interested in additional cost effective tips. Here are a few more that may be helpful. Tip 2: Use Work Folders to help organize you research in a cost effective manner: You can create a work folder and save and access documents in your work folders for FREE for up to one year! You can also annotate documents and highlight text and save selected passages of a document to a work folder. You will be notified automatically if folder documents have changed. For instance, if you want to know if a Shepard’s signal has changed since you saved the case or Shepard’s report to your work folder you can just click and update—at no extra charge for in-subscription documents.
Q2: Is there a way I can be notified of changes to a certain piece of legislation?
Hey Joel. That's another great question. The answer is yes! Alerts are a great way to automatically receive updates on the information that is most important to you and your clients. You can set up an alert in case law, the news, etc. With regard to legislation - you can set up an alert to be notified of any pending legislation that may amend, repeal or enact a change to the legislation you are viewing. You simply click on the “bell” icon at the top left of the page you are viewing. You will then select how often you would like the alert to run (daily, business days, weekly, monthly) and choose your delivery option – you can view the alerts online on Lexis Advance or you can have the alert emailed directly to you.
There are also step-by-step instructions about how to set up, manage and share an alert. Visit this LexTalk post for more information.
Q3: Can the searches be limited to materials that are within my subscription?
A3. Hey Deanna thanks for your question! This is an interesting one because on Lexis Advance you have the ability to search the entire “universe” of Lexis content simultaneously in one search. Smaller sized law firms (approximately 50 attorneys and under) will have the ability to use the “post-search” filters on the left hand side of your search results to view only those documents that are “in plan.” However, ALL users (no matter the size of your organization) have the ability to view only those documents that are in plan. You do not have to worry about accessing “out of plan” documents. There will be an “out of plan” warning next to all out of plan documents that appear in your search results. You will also be notified of the retail rate to open the document. Thus – no fear of accidentally incurring out of contract charges.
Sometimes when I run a search, my results don’t have a timeline in Secondary (or Legis, etc.) Do you know why that is the case?
A4. Another good question! Individual post-search filters (such as the date restriction/time-line) will only appear for a result set if they apply to every document in the answer set. In an initial Secondary tab result set, you may have a mix of documents from various sources that contain dates (law reviews) and those that don’t (Jurisprudence, Treatises). If you click on “Law Reviews and Journals” under the Content Type filter, you will see the timeline appear – because all of your documents are now Law Reviews/Journals, and all have specific dates.
How do I find a specific source using Lexis Advance?
A5. Hey Matt. Thanks for your question. Lexis Advance makes finding a specific source (whether it's a law review journal, or news paper, etc.) very easy. You can easily find sources by typing the name of the source in the big red search box, and as you type you will the word wheel will offer the option to sources with matching names. You don’t have to go to the Browse Sources page, though that is still available as well.
As our discussion end time draws near, do you have any other tips or suggestions that you are willing to share with the group?
A6. Hey Jon - Sure! One of my favorite tips to share is with regard to Shepard's. You can run a Shepard's report to validate and find additional supporting authority (for FREE!). The Shepard’s® report is included in the document charge of the case or statute you are viewing. You can narrow your results using several post search Filters such as: Type of Analysis (positive, negative, etc.) Court, Headnote, Terms Within Results (similar to FOCUS on lexis.com) and Timeline. You can also use the blue “depth of discussion” bars to quickly find only those cases that truly discuss and analyze the case you are Shepardizing.
