Gabhan graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2021. He moved to London to undertake an LLM in Environmental Law at University College London. Since graduating, he has completed internships at Southwark Law Centre, focusing on unequal impacts of development on South London communities, and at Friends of the Earth, where he gained experience in a wide variety of climate litigation. He joined Richard Buxton Solicitors in November 2024, to work in these two interest areas of planning and environmental law.

Matthew joined Richard Buxton Solicitors in 2016 and is a dual-qualified lawyer.

Matthew advises clients on a wide range of environmental legal issues. He represents private individuals, residents’ groups and NGOs in planning and environmental judicial reviews and statutory nuisance claims. Matthew also has experience in disputes before tribunals, in planning and enforcement appeals, and in local plan examinations.  He has represented clients at all levels of the UK Court system, including the UK Supreme Court.  In September 2024 he was featured as the Law Society Gazette’s weekly “Lawyer in the News” for his role in the successful challenge to the Cumbria coal mine.

Prior to his move to the UK, Matthew worked at the Natural Resources Defense Council, a leading U.S. environmental conservation organisation. At NRDC, Matthew managed litigation and other advocacy efforts to protect communities and the environment from fracking.
