Lewis Silkin

I am Co-Head of Lewis Silkin's Data & Privacy Group. I work in three main areas: data & privacy, general employment law, and sports law. I advise some of the world's leading companies on the adoption of global privacy strategies and on the full range of data protection/privacy issues including: data protection/privacy audits; data subject rights requests management; dealing with data breaches; extra-EEA data transfers; advising generally on data privacy policies/notices; handling Information Commissioner’s Office, and other regulatory queries/investigations; marketing/cookie issues; and, helping clients update their data protection/privacy practices in light of Brexit. I hold the CIPP/E data protection/privacy accreditation from the IAPP and have spoken all over the world on data protection/privacy issues. Under its Data & Privacy Rankings for 2020 Legal 500 says that my “advice is particularly commercial and practical” I deal with all general day-to-day employment queries and have significant expertise in advising on the practical implications of TUPE and on large scale redundancy/dismissal procedures. I am regularly instructed to act for clients in relation to Employment Tribunal and High Court claims. I am also regularly engaged on investigations (both open and legally privileged) for clients about a variety of different issues. I am part of the Lewis Silkin Sports Law Group and have a varied practice encompassing many different areas of sports law (with a specialism in data & privacy and employment sports law). Under its Sport rankings for 2013 Legal 500 says: "The ‘incredibly diligent’ Alexander Milner-Smith is an expert."

Managing Associate, Data, Privacy & Cyber

Lewis Silkin

I am a full-service data protection lawyer in Lewis Silkin’s Data, Privacy & Cyber team advising domestic and international clients on UK and EU data privacy compliance. I am known for my expertise in workplace privacy having practiced internationally as an employment lawyer prior to joining Lewis Silkin. I manage complicated employee data subject rights requests (DSARs) and support clients during UK and European regulatory investigations (such as ICO investigations and dawn raids). I am frequently asked to advise on UK and European employee monitoring rules. I lead data protection support for Lewis Silkin’s M&A practice providing timely and practical advice at all stages of a transaction lifecycle. I also run post-transaction remediation projects in respect of data protection warranties and undertakings. Examples of my recent work include: Acting as lead UK/European data protection lawyer for a US headquartered technology company advising on all aspects of data protection law including risk assessments covering multiple AI products under development. Providing strategic advice to a global car manufacturer during a high profile data protection dispute with a departing executive. Advising one of the UK’s largest newspapers following a significant and potentially high-profile data breach.
