Continuing Education Requirements

Viewing our webinars can help solicitors and other legal and tax professionals meet the training requirements set out by their regulators.

A brief description of the continuing education requirements laid down by some of the main professional bodies appears below.

Solicitors

The SRA has set out a Statement of solicitor competence which defines the standards that the regulator requires from all solicitors. This includes:

  • A2 - Maintain competence and legal knowledge.
  • A4 - Draw on detailed knowledge/understanding.

All solicitors must reflect on their practice and undertake regular learning and development so that their skills and knowledge remain up to date. All solicitors need to make an annual declaration to the SRA to confirm that that they have done this.

For further details visit the SRA website.

Barristers

After completing their training, all barristers are required to possess the knowledge, skills and attributes outlined in the Professional Statement to at least the level of the Threshold Standard.

However, they subsequently required to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to continually update and develop their knowledge and skills in order to keep themselves up to date and maintain high standards as well as adapt to the changing needs of clients.

Viewing our webinars can help barristers meet their Core Duties and CPD requirements set out under Part 4, Section C of the Bar Standards Board Handbook

Legal Executives

CILEx operates an outcomes focused scheme for most CILEx members, which means that through the CPD year, members should follow the process of Plan, Act, Evaluate and Reflect to identify their development needs and maintain and enhance their competence.

CILEX defines CPD as “To maintain, improve and extend the skills and qualities necessary for the proper performance of professional and legal duties and compliance required by CILEx Regulation, to ensure confidence in the professionalism and competence of CILEx members.”

For further details visit the CILEx website.

Chartered Certified Accountants

Each year ACCA members should identify areas for development and do CPD that helps them to meet their development needs, to ensure their skills and knowledge are up to date.

Members need to keep a record, as each year they need to demonstrate what CPD they have done in the form of an annual CPD declaration.
