The Smart Grid: An Analysis

Much of the recent talk about alternative sources of energy has focused on the need for expanding and improving the electrical grid.  At the same time, in the interest of efficiency and conservation, there has been much chatter about turning the rather antique electrical grid into a so-called smart grid.  What is a smart grid? What are its components, and what efficiencies might it bring?  A nice summary of what it will take to create a so-called smart grid, and what efficiencies it might bring to the electrical system, can be found at

It is also important to bear in mind that as the grid, business, and homes become more dependent on computer systems, they also become more vulnerable to hacking and attack.
