You'd think a million-dollar fine would have hammered home the lesson. Nearly five years ago, that's what retailer Abercrombie & Fitch paid ICE to settle an I-9 audit beef. Seems the company's hand-crafted, artisanal electronic I-9 system dropped a stitch here and there, big time.
But some companies never learn. On June 25, 2015 A&F settled with DOJ for $3.6K back pay to an injured party...and a $154K back pay fund for others who may have been harmed. In the 2015 action, A&F had demanded specific documentation from an employee to verify employment eligibility, in clear violation of the law.
