Librarian Relations Consultant Research Tip: Best practices for searching news on expert witnesses
When finding and vetting expert witnesses, it’s important to search News on Lexis Advance as well to find out what experts are saying about a particular topic, where they are referenced related to a particular matter, etc.
The news media loves to use the word “expert” when describing people, though “professor” (if an academic) and “doctor” (if a medical issue) is often used. One other term that might be used, depending on the topic, is the word “researcher”—and possibly “scientist” if such applies.
Sample searches for more precise results:
- EXPERT /10 BLOCKCHAIN
- EXPERT /10 BUILDING /5 CONSTRUCTION
- EXPERT OR PROFESSOR OR SCIENTIST W/10 (ELECTROMAGNET! OR ELECTRO- MAGNET! W/5 FIELD) OR EMF W/25 CANCER! OR HARMFUL
- EXPERT OR RESEARCHER OR DOCTOR /10 OPIOID EPIDEMIC
If you retrieve too many results, add one or both of the following:
- AND HLEAD (your topic)
- AND ATLEAST5 (your topic)
