For Marva Woods, Paralegal Program Manager, dedication, resilience, and making a difference are themes of her career.
Marva has been a dedicated LexisNexis team member since 1999. For several years, she worked as a Practice Area Consultant & Legal Research Attorney until transitioning to Paralegal Program Manager, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Marva reflects on the benefits of working at LexisNexis for so long, and how she has grown her career.
“My perspective is unique because I have had the pleasure of meeting so many different people from different divisions and roles,” she says.
Supported Professionally and Personally
Throughout Marva’s career at LexisNexis, she has felt supported by her managers both professionally and personally.
“My managers have always encouraged thinking outside of the box while being strategic in planning and implementation.”
Marva says that her managers recognize the importance of work-life balance. She feels lucky knowing she has felt comfortable and accepted when bringing her ideas and passions to the table.
Educating the future
Because Marva felt supported in following her passions, when she noticed a growing need for educating youth on the judicial system, she brought an idea forward, as a Rule of Law Project for LexisNexis. The project was picked up as a larger initiative by the LexisNexis African Ancestry Network to bring the idea into fruition.
“Each week, we are teaching the children about different aspects of rule of law but in a fun and engaging way,” she explains. The goal of the program is to teach youth on how the law impacts their life and how they can make an impact on the future of rule of law. The program currently operates weekly at a local elementary school.
This project continues to grow and partners with local nonprofits and a Historically Black College/ University (HBCU) in the area. Again, Marva reflects on how instrumental LexisNexis support has by wide-reaching throughout the development of this project.
Small acts making lasting impact
Marva is attentive and has great interpersonal skills, which leaves a lasting impression on LexisNexis’ customers. Some of her best days are when she receives ‘thank you’ notes from customers. Marva finds that when you are coming from a genuine place, “it doesn't take something that feels like a huge task, a huge deal.”
Marva has also been on the receiving end of acts of kindness from her LexisNexis colleagues, who supported her unconditionally during hard times.
“I’ve created true friendships with my coworkers,” she says. “l feel like my heart is going to burst from the love and care that I receive from them.”
There is nothing small about the impact Marva has made at her time with LexisNexis. Congratulations and thank you for your inspiring work.
