LexisNexis Protégé™ Legal AI Assistant Marks Transition to Personalized Gen AI for Lawyers

It was less than one year ago when LexisNexis debuted Lexis+ AI™ , the first comprehensive legal research solution powered by generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) trained for the legal profession, ushering in a new era in legal research. 

This summer, we stirred up an industry-wide buzz with the announcement of the U.S. Commercial Preview program for LexisNexis Protégé™ , which is being rolled out in the third-generation release of Lexis+ AI. 

“Protégé marks a substantial leap forward in personalized generative AI that will transform legal work, with personalization choices controlled by the customer,” said the official press release. “Customer-driven innovation is core to the company’s product development, and LexisNexis is taking a customer-first approach to the generative AI journey as well.” 

What Makes Protégé Different? 

The first versions of Legal AI platforms have been powered by tools built as one experience for everyone. This next phase that LexisNexis is pioneering is to develop a Legal AI Assistant uniquely customized and tailored for each individual legal professional. 

Protégé is a private, trusted Legal AI Assistant that places the user in control and delivers uniquely personalized work product in a private, secure setting. Personalization choices are controlled by the user or their organization to optimize the user’s Gen AI experience. For example, the tool will support legal professionals in the following ways: 

• Understanding legal work product and anticipating the user’s needs

It pro-actively suggests specific legal resources (based on the user’s LexisNexis subscriptions) to provide insights and relevant analytics. 

• Working alongside the user’s technology ecosystem 
  Protégé seamlessly works across the LexisNexis AI-powered ecosystem, from the company’s portfolio of products to Microsoft 365 for Word, Outlook, Teams and Copilot applications. This reduces application switching time and accelerates efficiency by meeting users where they work. 

• Integrating safety, security and privacy design principles 
  The Protégé core framework ensures that interactions are backed up by state-of-the-art security and privacy technology that keeps user information and client data highly secure. 

What’s Next? 

As is often the case with our product innovation roadmap, LexisNexis is teaming up with leading Law360 Leaderboard firms as part of the commercial preview of Protégé and we will be tapping into their continuous feedback to modify the tool in a way that best serves our customers’ needs. 

Throughout the remainder of 2024, we will be rolling out new functionality built into Protégé that extends the personalization capabilities of the tool, including deeper insights from internal firm data and wider integration across more LexisNexis legal research solutions. Looking to 2025, Protégé will harness new technology innovations to uniquely support individual users, such as answering prompts by voice, multimedia processing across various formats, and news horizon scanning to identify breaking opportunities and emerging risks.
