Rethinking Research: 4 Features (Besides Being a Premium Content Source) that Put Nexis Head-and-Shoulders Above the Competition

August 31, 2021

The great American storyteller Mark Twain once wrote, “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter—it’s the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” The same is true about the importance of choosing the right tool to make complex business research easier. You don’t need a search engine; you need a research engine that’s turbo-charged to deliver relevant results from premium content sources.

For organizations around the world, that tool is Nexis®. With nearly 50,000 global sources of news and company information—all in one place—Nexis connects business professionals to highly-relevant data for capturing insights into trends, conducting SWOT analyses, exploring emerging markets and more. But our world-renowned content collection is just the fuel for research. Take a look under the hood to see how the features and functionality of Nexis empowers performance that can help you pull ahead of the competition.

1.    Get research off to a fast start with Advanced Search pages

Maybe all you’re interested in is news. Or perhaps you’re on the hunt for market insights. The Advanced Search pages in Nexis simplifies search set-up within a specific content type, whether it is News, Companies, Market Insight, Biographies or Legal. Each Advanced Search page provides fields for searching segments and any applicable commands for that type of content. It’s an intuitive approach for building a targeted search query—even if you aren’t a Boolean expert.

2.    Boost results relevance with LexisNexis® SmartIndexing Technology™

Sifting through millions of documents could be a time-consuming endeavour if it weren’t for our industry-leading approach to making content more searchable. As soon as new content enters our system, it goes through an enrichment process. Using natural language processing and other AI technologies, our SmartIndexing identifies and tags documents based on more than 7,000 subject and industries, as well as companies, noteworthy people, and locations. Our behind-the-scenes work allows you to make precision searches—without having to write a complicated Boolean search query. Instead, simply go to the Power Search page and start typing a topic to see suggestions of relevant SmartIndexing terms covering a Subject, Industry, Geography or Company. Need inspiration? You can also browse and select relevant terms, allowing for targeted results that can be further narrowed with post-search filters.

3.    Stop reinventing the wheel by using Saved Searches

It would be great if research were a one-and-done proposition, but that’s not how it works. News happens 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. What was timely, relevant information last week could be woefully out of date today. Saved searches solve the problem. Once you’ve created a search that delivers targeted results, Nexis lets you save it to repeat later. What’s more, you can edit, filter, and save new searches based on existing ones. This could be particularly useful if, for example, you want to establish individual company searches based on similar criteria.

4.    Keep your team in the know with timely Alerts & Shared Folders

When news breaks about a topic or company of interest, make sure those who need to know, do. Nexis allows you to set up Alerts—delivered via email or within Nexis in the Alerts tab—so you can always stay on top of the latest updates. In addition, you can share Alerts with other Nexis users across your organization by entering the email addresses of the intended recipients. And with the newly available Nexis Reader subscriptions, you can even share content with co-workers that don’t have access to the Nexis research platform. Nexis also supports shared folders, so you can organize research results for easy access. You can even add comments to articles of interest or highlight specific details in articles, providing useful context that keeps others informed at a glance.

Take Nexis for a test drive to experience these features yourself!
