American Maritime Cases Now Exclusive on LexisNexis

January 01, 2021

NEW YORK – LexisNexis® today announced its acquisition of American Maritime Cases (“AMC”) content portfolio, a specialized collection of maritime and admiralty cases and curated primary law sources, as well as AMC’s in-depth index of maritime topics. Effective January 1, 2021, LexisNexis will be the exclusive provider of this critical content and LexisNexis is committed to continuing AMC’s tradition of providing authoritative and targeted practice area coverage of maritime law for its customers.

AMC has provided its customers with authoritative admiralty and maritime resources for nearly 100 years and the publisher has established itself as the go-to source for maritime cases and other materials. After the company made the decision to close its operation earlier this year, LexisNexis reached an agreement with AMC to continue its coverage and ensure that our customers and those relying on the AMC service will have authoritative maritime materials that meet their practice needs.

“We understand that AMC is a must-have resource for our customers practicing maritime law and we are proud to be the exclusive provider of AMC cases. We will continue to work with expert practitioners to identify the most important maritime cases and issues impacting the practice,” Alison Manchester, VP, Primary Law, LexisNexis.

The AMC collection includes the following resources for maritime practitioners:

  • US case opinions from federal and state courts, as well as proprietary AMC headnotes specific to maritime cases
  • Selected decisions from the Federal Maritime Commission
  • Arbitration decisions
  • Selected Statutes, Acts, and Treaties
  • Selected international decisions

In addition, LexisNexis offers a comprehensive set of secondary materials and other resources to aid maritime practitioners, which can be found in the Admiralty & Maritime Law Practice Area, available from the home screen on Lexis+™ and Lexis®. Those resources include Benedict on Admiralty, Benefits Review Board Longshore Reporter, and Society of Maritime Arbitrator Award Decisions. Benedict on Admiralty is the most-cited admiralty treatise with citations in over 1,700 federal cases and the most comprehensive with 35 volumes written by 30 authors.

About American Maritime Cases
Since its founding in 1923 by practicing maritime lawyers, American Maritime Cases (“AMC”) has earned the reputation as a critical source for researching significant maritime decisions rendered by United States (Federal and State) courts. It also reports legislative action, administrative law decisions, arbitration decisions, Maritime Law Association of the U.S. source material and occasionally Canadian and other international cases and other items deemed significant. AMC's status as the basic source for researching American maritime law is due primarily to its copyrighted indexing system and meaningful, practical headnotes which are prepared by experienced admiralty attorneys.  This system is unique as it permits a user to quickly identify the key court decisions as to a pertinent topic without having to spend significant time reading through irrelevant or overly broad opinions, including opinions located via electronic general word searches.
