LexisNexis® and the International Homicide Investigators Association Recognize Lt. Brian Murphy of the Oak Creek (WI) Police Department for Service Excellence 6/30/2014

Lt. Murphy Honored for Sikh Temple Shooting Response

WASHINGTON, DC and ATLANTA — The International Homicide Investigators Association (IHIA) and LexisNexis® Risk Solutions today announced the winner of the annual IHIA Award for Excellence, which recognizes individuals or organizations who have distinguished themselves amongst their peers by contributing to investigative professionalism through outstanding accomplishment.

Presented during the IHIA Annual Symposium, which took place June 22-27, 2014 in Philadelphia, PA, this year's award went to Lt. Brian Murphy (Retired) of the Oak Creek (WI) Police Department. Lt. Murphy was honored for his actions in responding to the August 5, 2012 mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. His swift response and subsequent engagement of the shooter directly prevented further casualties to victims still trapped inside the temple, and resulted in Lt. Murphy sustaining 17 gunshot wounds.

"Officers like Lt. Brian Murphy exemplify dedication and commitment with disregard for their own personal safety in order to protect others," said Capt. Mike Corrado of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey, and current IHIA President. "Lt. Murphy's heroic actions stand out above others, and make us proud to recognize him with the IHIA Award for Excellence."

From statements that were obtained from members of the temple, the noise of Lt. Murphy's squad car drew the suspect out of the temple, ending the shooting spree inside. Lt. Murphy's quick response time and immediate action prevented further casualties to victims that were still trapped inside at the time of Lt. Murphy's arrival. Lt. Murphy demonstrated unwavering commitment to the highest ideals of law enforcement, even refusing medical care for multiple life-threatening injuries until the victims had received treatment.

"LexisNexis is a longtime partner of IHIA, and stories like Lt. Murphy's heroic efforts are the main reason why we sponsor this awards program," said Haywood J. Talcove, chief executive officer, Government, LexisNexis Risk Solutions. "We want to thank Lt. Murphy for his tremendous service to the Oak Creek Police Department and the community they serve and protect."
