May CalendarHas a spring slump given you writer's block? Never fear — blogging inspiration is never further away than your calendar. Each month brings a host of holidays, observances and seasonal events that can help provide legal blogging content for attorneys working in any and every practice area.

Here are some noteworthy observances to consider featuring in your law firm's blog:

  • It's estimated more than 100,000 children in the foster care system are eligible for adoption — and several million Americans looking to adopt. May is Foster Care Month, and family law and adoption lawyers can use it as an opportunity to discuss the pros and cons of adopting a child in foster care.
  • Estate planning lawyers and elder care attorneys should have no shortage of ideas for blog content in May, which is designated as both Mental Health Month and Older Americans Month. Family members who are caring for a relative with diminished mental capacity can benefit from learning more about conservatorships, trusts and other legal resources available to them.
  • Intellectual property lawyers may sometimes feel as if they get the shortchanged when it comes to holidays and observances. But not in May, which is Inventor's Month. In recent years, there's been a surge in the number of self-employed Americans, many of whom are pursuing endeavors in technology and the arts. Inventor's Month is the ideal springboard for IP attorneys to talk to these entrepreneurs about protecting their ideas and innovations.
  • Memorial Day (May 27) marks the unofficial start of summer. June is also the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. Real estate lawyers can discuss what is and is not typically covered by a homeowner's insurance policy when tornados, hurricanes and flood waters wreak havoc in a community. And personal injury attorneys can provide safety tips about those fun, but potentially dangerous summer activities such as setting off fireworks, hosting pool parties and boating. (Note that May 18-24 is National Safe Boating Week.)

Adding new and timely content to your law firm's blog may also give your website a boost in online search results. That's because Google and other search engines look at not only the relevance of a page's content to your overall website, but also the frequency with which your site is updated.
