Martial Arts Instructor Appears On News While Collecting Disability For Neck Injury (OH) – Bob Morgan has pled guilty to workers' compensation fraud for working while receiving benefits. Investigators learned that Morgan was working as a martial arts instructor, teaching mixed martial arts at two locations, while collecting disability for a neck and low back injury. The evidence included instructional videos and a news cast showing Morgan engaged in physical martial arts instruction.   Read more

Former Town Selectwoman Found Guilty of Additional Charges After Previous Fraud Conviction (ME) – Former Chelsea selectwoman Carole Swan has been found guilty by a federal court jury of extortion for soliciting kickbacks from the contractor with the town’s plowing and road contracts. Earlier in the summer she was found guilty of  workers' compensation fraud for seeking disability benefits while claiming that she could not clean her house or even blow dry her own hair by herself, while she was secretly working for her husband’s construction company.   Read more

Former Sheriff's Office Employee and Husband Sentenced For Workers' Compensation Fraud (CA) - Keri Atwood, a former civilian employee of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, has been sentenced to probation of 36 months, 150 days in the county jail, and restitution of $18,319, and her husband, Michael Atwood, has been sentenced to probation of 36 months and 60 days in the county jail. Keri Atwood was placed on disability after she reported to her supervisors that she sustained an injury to her left ankle when another employee accidentally hit the back of her foot with a mail cart. She used crutches or a wheelchair to get to her medical appointments. After her appointments, though, she was seen walking freely and engaging in a number of physical activities that she told her treating physicians that she could not perform.   Read more

UPS Employee Painted While On Disability (CT) – Gerardo Rojas has been charged with fraudulent claim or receipt of workers’ compensation benefits for double dipping. Rojas allegedly collected more than $32,123 in disability benefits following a work-related injury he reported suffering in November 2011 while employed by United Parcel Service (UPS). He is accused of failing to report income he received for working for painting contractors while collecting those benefits.   Read more

Disability Does Not Slow Down Car Towing Business (OH) – Angel Ocasio has pled guilty to workers' compensation fraud for working while receiving benefits. Ocasio was found to be self-employed as a tow truck driver and auto mechanic for his car repair and towing company while he was also receiving temporary total disability benefits.   Read more
