Financial Fraud Prosecutor Jillian B. Berman Joins Levine Lee in New York City

Jillian B. Berman, who served for nine years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, has become a partner at Levine Lee LLP in New York City.

As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Berman directed investigations and tried a variety of cases, including complex white collar matters, and argued a number of appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

As a member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force, Ms. Berman investigated and prosecuted a broad range of federal securities and commodities fraud offenses, and coordinated parallel civil enforcement proceedings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodities Futures Trading Commission and other regulatory agencies. She also directed white collar investigations and prosecutions related to insider trading, investment adviser fraud, market manipulation, stock loan fraud, Ponzi schemes and private placement offerings, among others. In addition, she has extensive experience litigating restitution and asset forfeiture issues.

“We are thrilled to have Jillian on board. She is an outstanding trial and appellate lawyer who is equally comfortable appearing before judges and juries,” says Levine Lee partner and co-founder Kenneth E. Lee. “Jillian’s deep experience investigating and prosecuting complex white collar matters, combined with her well-earned reputation as a stellar lawyer and person of integrity, will be a tremendous asset to our firm and clients,” he added.

Before entering government service, Berman clerked for Judge Dennis Jacobs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Richard L. Williams of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. She also practiced complex commercial litigation at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington D.C.

Ms. Berman graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and Cornell University.

“I’m very excited to be joining a dynamic, growing firm that has developed a reputation for practicing law at the highest standards,” Ms. Berman says. “I also value the firm’s collegial and collaborative culture.”

Ms. Berman is the third former prosecutor at the firm. The others are partners and co-founders Seth L. Levine and Scott B. Klugman.
