Media Monitoring Confirms America Really Loves Mom

Do Americans love their mamas? According to media monitoring and new analysis, you bet your sweet bippy they do. Between April 24 and May 10, Mom was more popular than any of the U.S. presidential candidates and general election coverage – combined. In other words, if media coverage is a popularity contest, your mom is winning.

Mom beat out Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in media coverage between April 24 and May 10. Approximately 32,500 articles were published in honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8. Trump’s media coverage – which is easily the media frontrunner this election season – looked paltry by comparison, at 4,100 news stories. Even Clinton, herself a mother and grandmother, couldn’t come close to the mother of all moms … yours.



Surprisingly, media coverage of Mother’s Day was higher than expected on Friday, May 8. A quick glance at headlines and posts published in print, broadcast, online and social media networks indicates there were a lot of last-minute gift guides, recipes for the perfect Mother’s Day feast and inspirational life lessons from Mom published in that time period.


As further evidence of Americans’ devotion to Mom, LexisNexis also tracked the positive, neutral and negative sentiment of articles published about Mother’s Day. While the media is expected to provide neutral perspective on the day’s issues, in this case, reporters were anything but; media coverage was overwhelming positive. Compare the 50.62 percent of positive media coverage of Mother’s Day to the 13.36 percent of positive media coverage associated with the presidential election. Com-MOM-der in Chief, anyone?



It’s clear Americans are more impressed with their mothers than with the mother of elections for President of the United States, Election 2016. But here’s the real question: How will Dad fare?
