Why You Should Ditch Black Friday & Upgrade To #GivingTuesday

Every year after Thanksgiving comes to an end and families gear up for Christmas, the Black Friday frenzy begins. Traditionally the busiest shopping weekend of the year, retailers discount their hottest must have items and shoppers brave the crowds by the millions.

In 2016, 137 million people grabbed their wallets and headed out to get a jump on their holiday shopping. And, according to the National Retail Federation, an estimated $967 will be spent per shopper for the holidays in 2017, racking in over $6.5 Billion in revenue for retailers across the United States.

So while you’re waiting in lines, braving the cold and fighting your way through the crowds to save Christmas by insuring Johnny gets his discounted big screen, Lacy gets her finger monkey and George has his Super NES Classic Edition Nintendo, what if there was an alternative?

This alternative I speak of is Giving Tuesday. A 24-hour period devoted to charitable giving and free of long lines and grumpy shoppers.

The idea was created by a group of people from a New York cultural center in 2012 who thought how much more could be done with the money we work hard to earn than the purchase of toys and electronics that end up replaced or misplaced shortly after purchase.

But it’s not just about the money, it’s also about giving of our time and talents to charities across our communities that support causes we believe in.

So maybe it’s showing Lacy that her love for animals can be served to help dogs in her neighborhood that are left out in the cold and taken to local shelters to find new homes. Or George’s passion for electronics and games can actually assist kids at nearby schools who need funding for computers in their libraries and while Johnny would love a new big screen, he may realize that over half a million people in the United States are homeless and in need of proper shelter and food as winter rears it’s ugly head, and maybe knowing a family is better off because of his time and resources proves to be more rewarding.    

As we go into the holidays, let’s remember the reason for the season and take the opportunity to bring some holiday cheer to the people around us in need this year. Not to say we can’t have our candy cane and eat it too, maybe it’s just a smaller candy cane.
