As of October 17, there have been 15 weather- or climate-related disaster events this year that have caused over $1 billion in damage in a single state or group of states, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Those events consist of a drought, impacting three states; a freeze, affecting nine states; and a wildfire impacting eight states; 2 floods, impacting 13 states, 3 tropical cyclones, affecting 9 states and Puerto Rico; and 7 severe storms, affecting 31 states. Many states have been impacted by more than one of these events.
