Couch to LexisNexis Ironman 70.3 Raleigh

Is it just me or have you also noticed that office and social conversations increasingly revolve around participation in fitness related activities? Not the same chatter about golfing or evening pick-up basketball games; Instead it seems more people I know are spending their weekends getting ready for or participating in 5-10k races, relays, half marathon, and even Ironman competitions. Wearable trackers, like Fitbit® bracelets, are now ubiquitous and somewhat fashionable. And with the advent of fitness apps that track and share workout data, my Facebook Newsfeed constantly announces that people I know are up and moving and want to talk about it. I must admit that even a sedentary person like me has become intrigued enough by the trend to research and install the Couch to 5K app on my iPhone, in anticipation of the potential of maybe, possibly signing up for a 5k race before the end of next year.

I was excited this week to find out that LexisNexis has noticed the trends towards health and wellness as a priority for its employees and decided to act in support of it. LexisNexis has become the title sponsor of the 2014 Raleigh Half Ironman competition. According to, “Triathlon participation in the United States is at an all-time high, which reached 550,446 members in 2012. Membership hovered between 100,000 to 130,000 from 1998-2000.” With over 20 employees signed up to compete in this amazing test of endurance, the LexisNexis contingent will be out in force to demonstrate their commitment to the sport and individual competitive drive.

If you are in the Raleigh area on Saturday, June 1st, we hope you will come out with your family to cheer on the athletes as they kick through the 1.2 mile course in Jordan Lake, jostle for the lead in the 56-mile bike course through Chatham and Wake counties, and struggle for the endurance to complete the 13.1 mile run through downtown Raleigh.

Since my Couch-to-5K app is still waiting for me to log my Week 1 Day 1 workout, I won’t be competing, but I will be there on race day along with my fellow LexisNexis co-workers to support the athletes by volunteering at the Aid Station or Expo Space. We’d love the opportunity to meet you in person. Come out and cheer on the competitors while you ponder what it takes to become an ultra-athlete.

More details about the event can be found here: LexisNexis IronMan 70.3 Raleigh. We hope to see you there.
