French Southern and Antarctic Territories
Territory of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (French: Territoire des Terres australes et antarctiques françaises (abbreviation TAAF)), are consituted by three parts (a) a group of volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, southeast of Africa, approximately equidistant between Africa, Antarctica and Australia which includes Île Amsterdam, Île Saint-Paul, Îles Crozet, and Îles Kerguelen in the southern Indian Ocean near 43°S, 67°E; (b) Adélie Land, the French claim on the Antarctic continent under the Antarctic Treaty System; (c) and the Scattered islands in the Indian Ocean (Îles éparses de l'océan indien). The Glorioso Islands, Juan de Nova, and Europa, as well as the Bassas da India atoll, lie in the Mozambique Channel west of Madagascar, while the fourth island, Tromelin, lies about 220 miles east of Madagascar. Also in the Mozambique Channel is the Banc du Geyser, which was annexed by Madagascar in 1976. France continues to view the Banc du Geyser as part of the Îles Éparses.
According to new law 2007-224 of February 21, 2007, the Scattered Islands constitute the 5th district of French Southern and Antarctic Lands.
The territory is also often called the French Southern Territories (French: Terres australes françaises), which excludes Adélie Land where French sovereignty is is disputed under international law. The lands are not connected to France Antarctique, a former French colony in Brazil.
Considered to be a part of Metropolitan France, French law applies directly in these territories, augmented slightly by enabling and other specific laws and regulations. You may consult the bookstore (boutique) of LexisNexis France for the best and most comprehensive sources on French law as it may be applied in the Territories of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.
You will find a detailed description and expert analysis of French law as it applies throughout metropolitan France and the overseas territories in our treatise Doing Business in France.

Réunion
Réunion (French: formally La Réunion; formerly Île Bourbon) is an Indian Ocean island located east of Madagascar, roughly 200 kilometres (120 mi) south west of Mauritius. Réunion is an overseas département of France, thus Réunion is also one of the twenty-six regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the Republic with the same status as those regions which are located in Europe. Due to its location and DOM status, it is an outermost region of the European Union and, as an overseas department of France, is part of the Eurozone. Due to its location in a time zone to the east of Europe, Réunion was the first region in the world where the euro became legal tender. Considered to be a part of Metropolitan France, French law applies directly in these territories, augmented slightly by enabling and other specific laws and regulations. You may consult the bookstore (boutique) of LexisNexis France for the best and most comprehensive sources on French law as it may be applied in Réunion.
