The Workers’ Compensation Law Community’s Top 25 Blogs for 2011 – A Call for Your Suggestions

Dear Community Members:

Each year, LexisNexis honors a select group of blogs that set the online standard for a given industry.

The time has arrived for the LexisNexis Workers' Compensation Law Community Staff to make selections for its annual Top 25 Blogs for Workers' Compensation and Workplace Issues.

As always, we want to honor ongoing achievement by blogsites as well as point out the best newcomers.

Some of the things we review are: the quality of writing, frequency of posting, topics covered, interaction with the Internet community, format and design of blogsite, impact on workers' compensation and workplace issues, Google ranking and/or mentions by other sites.

The LexisNexis Workers' Compensation Law Community Staff will review all comments through October 21, 2011, and then make final determinations for the top 25 blogs and announce the honorees on the web center.

To "talk up" your favorite blog, you will need to be a registered Community member and be logged in. If you have not registered previously, follow this link to create a new registration or use your sign in credentials from your favorite social media site. Registration is free! Although I cannot recommend a blog site, I Twitter almost every week day the recent results of workers' compensation cases in Virginia, with links to the actual opinions. The opinions include Full Commission opinions, Court of Appeals opinions, and Supreme Court opinions. Look for me as dchmcnamara on Twitter! I hope I can be recognized for my effort to keep up with Virginia Workers' Compensation law, hot off the press!

If self-promotion is not prohibited, I humbly submit WCDefenseCA (wcdefenseca.wordpress.com), for daily updates and California Workers' Compensation Defense practice.

As far as workers' compensation blogs go, I check out Workers' Comp Insider (www.workerscompinsider.com) and Work Comp Roundup (http://blog.reduceyourworkerscomp.com/#axzz12R3lzf2M) on a near-daily basis, both of which I first learned about on this website.

I would like to suggest the blog Medicare Insights (www.medicareinsights.com), for consideration for the Top 25 Blogs for Workers' Compensation and Workplace Issues. This blog, which was launched a few months ago, performs an important function in the workers’ compensation world: updating companies on the requirements for Mandatory Insurer Reporting (MIR)) compliance. With hefty fines of up to $1,000 a day per claim at stake, firms have to understand and know exactly what is required of them to be compliant. The situation is further complicated by ongoing changes or delays in the regulations and their implementation. I’ve found that recent “Medicare Insights” topics such as, CMS Updated Timelines, Technical Look at MIR Reporting and Update in Workers’ Comp Regulations, to be helpful and timely in their content.

I am seeking to recommend http://navwaters.com/ for the Top Workers' Compensation Blogs.

The blog deals with maritime cases, including claims arising under the Jones Act, and general maritime law for crewmembers; the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act and its extensions, including, importantly, the Defense Base Act. I myself am an English Barrister (since 1972) though I have always worked in private industry. I worked in Marine Insurance from 1969 until 1985, when I began working on the Longshore Act and its extensions as head of legal and governmental services for a group self-insurer authorized under the LHWCA. Following my retirement in December 2005, I worked as Branch Chief of Financial Management, Insurance and Assessments, in the Division of Longshore And Harborworkers' Compensation in the OWCP of the Federal Department of Labor, retiring in December 2010.

I recommend the http://navwaters.com/ as a blog which provides clear, timely and accurate comment on this little known but important sector of workers' compensation law, providing an excellent resource for the uninitiated as well as for those few but geographically widespread practitioners, for whom such information and commentary are vital to their continued business.

I like the Workers Comp Roundtable blog (http://blog.reduceyourworkerscomp.com) This site is updated frequently and also has a rich amount of archived material that can be found in user friendly categories -- a good "go-to" place for practical information. I send clients (employers) there who want a good general library of ideas and thought about managing their WC risk. Since this blog is so uniquely focused on the employer/WC manager it has to have a spot in the top group.

I recently found the North Carolina Workers Compensation Journal (http://www.ncworkcompjournal.com/) and it has rapidly become my go-to blog for excellent insight and analysis into the workers compensation system in North Carolina and around the country. It also has lots of practical information about workers compensation in North Carolina. It should be one of your top blogs.

There is a firm in New York, Pasternack Tilker, that publishes a great blog called Workers Law Watch: http://workerslawwatch.com/. They update it regularly with interesting and practical posts about about workers compensation law, all from the perspective of injured workers. I recommend it for your top 25 list.

As an employer, my team follows Work Comp Roundup for safety and workers compensation information that is PRACTICAL in showing us how to reduce our costs. Last year we lowered our premium substantially as a result of meeting our insurance company adjuster to learn how our claims are handled and find out what we can do better when we report our claims to the insurance company -- something we read about on Work Comp Roundup. We appreciate information that helps us manage the risks of running a business.

I would like to make some positive comments about WorkComp Roundup. I'd like to say, it's an excellent site. I've had a lot of people contact me and we've discussed things that appear on it. It seems to be very practical and tends to be oriented for employers. So that's my recommendation.

I'm an attorney in the field of Workers' Comp. I'm calling to endorse the website of WorkComp Roundup. I find it's a really good site. It has original material, and in comparison with some of the other sites I've looked at, it seems to be all original material and it's not pirating other people's articles. And for that reason I find it very helpful and it's the first place I go to. Thank you.
