The Lexis Advance® service has many unique and interesting features, and one I want to highlight is the Legal Issue Trail™. The Legal Issue Trail is a patented feature on Lexis Advance that helps you find connections between cases on a specific point of law that may not have otherwise been made. How can you put this feature to use? When you are examining a case, and you want to use this feature, click on “Activate Passages,” found in the box titled About this Document which is next to the case title. Lexis Advance puts a perforated box around each of the specific points of law or legal issues identified in the case. Now as you review the case and you find a point of law that is directly “on point” to what you are researching, you can click inside that perforated box (which contains the actual sentence or paragraph that covers the point of law) to get to a trail of related cases.
The trail provides links to cases that your case cites for the exact same point of law, as well as other cases that cite to your case for the exact same point of law. Working with associates, you can show them that instead of spending time searching for “on point” cases, they can quickly identify “on point” cases, and spend their time analyzing and interpreting cases instead—thereby making them both efficient and productive!
