Librarian Relations Consultant Research Tip: ALLCAPS, CAPS and NOCAPS commands on Lexis Advance®

The Lexis Advance service now provides the ability to search using the commands ALLCAPS, CAPS and NOCAPS for News content. These commands will allow you to find results where the terms appear in all capitalization, initial capitalization and no capitalization, respectively. These search commands will save you time by generating a more relevant result set using the term in the intended context, and help you home in on the right news articles.

Here are a few examples:

  • ALLCAPS finds acronyms and other words in all caps. For example, ALLCAPS(AIDS) finds AIDS and ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME but not the verb “aids.”

  • NOCAPS finds words without caps. For example, NOCAPS(aids) focuses on the verb but doesn’t find AIDS.

  • CAPS finds words with initial caps. To limit your search to Puerto Rico and not the RICO Act, enter: Puerto CAPS(Rico).
