WILLIAMS & CONNOLLY ENDS ROPES & GRAY'S TWO-YEAR WINNING STREAK - NAMED BEST LAW FIRM TO WORK FOR; 13 OTHER RANKINGS RELEASED

New York, NY, (July 12, 2011) Prestige isn't everything, as Vault.com reveals with the release of its Law Firm Quality of Life Rankings for 2012.  While Wachtell dominated the Vault Law 100 Prestige Rankings released two weeks ago, it was a dogfight in this year's Quality of Life entries, with Williams & Connolly ending Ropes & Gray's two-year run as the Best Law Firm to Work For.

Vault.com's influential rankings are considered the "bible" for law students, associates, partners and law firm recruiters, providing a detailed perspective on the criteria considered by candidates when evaluating law firms.  The Law Firm Quality of Life Rankings provide a unique insider's perspective: associates ranked their own firms based on such areas as overall satisfaction, associate/partner relations, firm culture, hours, compensation, office space, training, pro bono work and green initiatives.  From those rankings, a weighted formula determines the Best Law Firms to Work For.

"This year, Williams & Connolly associates raved about their interesting and challenging work and high level of responsibility. Overall, associates feel appreciated and respected. The firm seems to be doing an excellent job keeping its associates happy," said Mary Kate Sheridan, law editor at Vault.com.

On what sets the firm apart, one Williams & Connolly associate spoke for many of his peers by stating, "The firm is absolutely wonderful - real, substantive work; direct access to even senior partners; interesting cases. The best may be that the firm is committed to giving you all of the support and resources needed to do the best job you can possibly do. It's incredibly intellectually satisfying."

Williams & Connolly earned its title after taking the top spot once again for Overall Satisfaction and by beating out Ropes & Gray for a No. 1 ranking in Firm Culture.  "I wake up every day excited to go to work," said one Williams & Connolly associate.

Williams & Connolly was also ranked No. 1 for Selectivity in Hiring and took the top prize for Associate-Partner Relations.  "I am always treated with respect, appreciation, and kindness by the partners I work with," said one associate at the firm.  "Partners treat associates as full-fledged team members who are trusted to handle all types of projects and whose opinions are sought out and respected. This is the aspect of being a Williams & Connolly associate that is most satisfying (and, based upon what I hear from friends at other firms, most unique)."

And the future continues to look bright for Williams & Connolly with associates also ranking the firm No. 1 in Business Outlook, stating, "All signs pointed to the firm being just as busy during the recession as it had ever been. The firm (as a litigation-only firm) is well-positioned to withstand market shifts."

Although Ropes & Gray lost its top spot as the Best Firm to Work For, it only did so by less than one-tenth of a point, coming in a strong second while also seeing success in various other Quality of Life rankings.  In addition to earning the top spot for Hours, the firm also came in at No. 1 in both Formal and Informal Training Opportunities with one associate stating, "Ropes invests a lot of time and resources in both formal training and informal mentorship and it is a fantastic place to grow as an attorney as a result," and another adding, "There are so many training opportunities, it's difficult to keep up."

Top Ranked Firms in Other Categories Include:

Compensation:  Boies, Schiller & Flexner ("If you work the hours, you reap the rewards.")

Office Space:  Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto ("The firm recently moved into a new building on 6th Ave. The office space is quite nice with everything updated. The kitchen/dining area includes a roof deck, which is quite nice when the weather is good.")

Pro Bono:  Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi ("The firm's commitment to pro bono work has been nationally recognized and is an ingrained part of the firm culture.")
